Alphabet Zoop is a educational program based around a weekly letter and animal. Each session consists of a picture story book, a song, a craft activity and a visual or tactile animal experience. The primary aim of this program is to provide a rich, stimulating environment where a child and their caregiver can learn together through music, movement and kinaesthetic activities and develop a strong connectedness with nature.
Alphabet Zoop is available to Zoo members only. If you would like to book a place for our next available program, please visit here

F is for Frog

"Der Glumph" went the little green frog....

Being such a loveable animal, the frog proved to be a successful choice for Alphabet Zoop this week. We were lucky enough to have a tactile experience with a Green Tree Frog called 'Noah', who was quite the gentleman when being touched by all those little hands!

The Wide-Mouthed Frog (A Pop-Up Book)This week we read 'The Wide Mouthed Frog' written by Faulkner, K. This is a pop-up book about a frog who is very curious about what other animals like to eat until he comes across an animal that likes to eat wide-mouthed frogs!

Our song of the week was Five Green and Speckled Frogs. We also sang the Der Glumph song which most of the children knew and were able to join in.

Five little speckled frogs
Five little speckled frogs,
Sat on a great big log,
Eating the most delicious bugs.
Yum! Yum!

One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are four speckled frogs. Brrp! Brrp!

(Repeat verse counting down from 4 to 2)
One little speckled frog,
Sat on a great big log,
Eating the most delicious bugs.
Yum! Yum!

One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are no speckled frogs. Brrp! Brrp!

Der Glumph
Der Glumph went the little green frog one day,
Der Glumph went the little green frog,
Der Glumph went the little green frog one day,
and they all went glumph, glumph, glumph.

But...we all know frogs go (hand clap)...la di da di da
(hand clap)...la di da di da,
(hand clap)...la di da di da.
We all know frogs go (hand clap)...la di da di da,
they don't go glumph, glumph, glumph.

If you are looking for a fun frog making activity, see below for instructions of how to make a Peg Frog.

Firstly, you get a plastic or wooden peg (make sure that the plastic peg is easy for the children to manipulate) and a template of a frog on its side. Colour the frog and cut its body horizontally in half. Glue both halves onto the two faces of the peg, allowing room for the children to use the end to press and make the frog open its mouth. A cute addition is to add a fly in the frog's mouth so that it looks like the frog is opening its mouth to eat the fly!
