The children had the privileged opportunity to touch the fur of 'Poetry', a Sumatran Tiger that lived at Melbourne Zoo until her death in 1997 at 19 years of age. They also could see and touch her skull and teeth. The children were fascinated by this unique experience, gently stroking her and lifting her head and tail. There was lots of discussion about what she felt like, was she real and even though she wasn't alive, it was still very important to respect her and be gentle with her remains.
The Sumatran Tiger is critically endangered with an estimated 300 left in the wild. The primary threat to this subspecies is habitat destruction and the palm oil industry.
