Alphabet Zoop is a educational program based around a weekly letter and animal. Each session consists of a picture story book, a song, a craft activity and a visual or tactile animal experience. The primary aim of this program is to provide a rich, stimulating environment where a child and their caregiver can learn together through music, movement and kinaesthetic activities and develop a strong connectedness with nature.
Alphabet Zoop is available to Zoo members only. If you would like to book a place for our next available program, please visit here

The Silkworm's Story

What a flutter such a tiny insect can create!

Today we discovered the story of the Silkworm, from egg to silkworm, cocoon and lastly the white moth (not a butterfly, as some of the children had expected!). We were also lucky to get to touch some silk fabric that the lovely Jill (an Alphabet Zoop volunteer) had brought along from her own collection.

If anyone ever decides to make a basic silkworm craft, your options of finding ideas are limited, trust me! So please feel free to use the idea that I came up with. Bear in mind its very basic!

You start with a diffusing leaf, which I purchased from Zart Art. You use a paintbrush or pipette to blot green food dye onto the leaf. Using two cotton wool balls, you pull one apart to make the body of the silkworm and use the other ball for its cocoon. Draw two black dots to make the silkworm's eyes and lastly you place the leaf on a black card backing so that it stands out.

  1. Hi Ange,
I showed Laura her photo on your Blog and she was very excited. Alphabet Zoop is a wonderful program that has been offered for 3-4 year olds. We have enrolled in the Term 2 program. I just hope it cools down soon.
